Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) introduced a bill last week that claims to be "reforming food safety" at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This is after the passage in the last Congress of the FDA food control law. That bill greatly expanded Federal control over food, and this bill continues the trend. | As Dr. Ron Paul has said, giving more power to agencies like FDA & USDA over our health and food is giving them more "power to abuse..." | The 67-page bill, introduced in the Senate with no cosponsors, expands the definition of 'adulterated' meat, poultry, and egg products and adds criminal penalties for food manufacturers that "knowingly" introduce contaminated food into commerce. This is also in line with the increase in penalties that was originally proposed in the 2010 FDA food control law, but not adopted at that time.
The bill claims: "Recent events demonstrate that the food safety system administered by the [USDA] Food Safety and Inspection Service needs modernizing to fully control hazards in regulated food; and these events have adversely affected consumer confidence."
