[Three Hexes] Sixguns And Sorcery

Campaign: Emerging from the strange tunnel that led from the deepest level of the dungeon, the Company of mercenaries and adventurers were surprised to find themselves on the edge of a desert, with nothing but mesas and open skies where they remembered forests and close mountains! The band of bank robbers and train hijackers were just as surprised to find a strangely clad group of soldiers in metal armor, and other oddly dressed, strange looking people with pointy ears, long beards or just half the size of regular folks! The initial showdown was what could be expected, with lead flying and magic missiles arcing, but these two groups now have a feud going... and there's more weird stuff emerging from those caves!

Homebase (Hex 0) (0101): Buzzard's Creek - This small town, perched on a cliff overlooking a small creek, is full of strange folks who don't care what you (or your money) look like, as long as your gold coins are real, your weapons are left at the door and you don't raise a ruckus! There is a regular influx of soldiers and gold prospectors hoping to strike it rich, as well as the occasional indigenous visitor and, more recently, strangely garbed travelers with odd accents and even more odd equipment! The priest at the local church isn't very happy about the competition from the odd pagans who are praying at the water well, and the Sheriff definitely is unhappy about the shoot-out with crossbows and some strange electric bolts that left a few by-standers injured!




Three Hexes
(Hex scale is 24 miles)

Location 1 (0200): Taheton's Band - A small village of  Lakota Native Americans, led by the stern chief Taheton, has lived in these lands for three generations. Recent skirmishes with strangely dressed mercenaries have Taheton considering moving, although his warriors were victorious and his medicine-woman considering what to do with the strange magical wand that the strange shaman used to kill with. They also are unsure what to do with a insatiable creature that eats rusty metal, although the chief is considering what havoc it might cause the white soldiers at Fort Mitchell. 

Location 2 (0000): Dry Stream Caves - These caves in the mountains by Dry Stream used to be the hideout for Buster's Broncos, but when the Golden Sword & Shield mercenary company arrived, the bandits beat a hasty retreat. They're sulking at a nearby camp, trying to figure out how to get back to the cave and get their stashed loot and firearms! They're especially alarmed at the strange beasts and horrors emerging from some of the other cave entrances, which seem to be settling down and making these lands their new home.

Location 3 (0000): Fort Mitchell - A small, stockaded US Army fort and trading post, set up ten years ago to protect the (brief) gold rush and town nearby, today barely holding out with less than fifty soldiers and officers. The colonel of the fort has declared a high alert, unsure of what to make of the recent dust-up with a group of orcs that emerged from the caves to the north. The appearance of a group of visitors that seemed right out of a fairy tale has left the fort buzzing, and given rise to the rumor that these are long-lost Knights of Camelot!

Boot Hill is the old TSR Western RPG first published in 1975 and mentioned in the AD&D Dungeon Master's Guide as one of the games that Player Characters could be crossed over to! Many D&D sessions certainly feel like the old spaghetti Westerns of the 1950s and 60s, leading up to the shoot-out (final boss battle). I hope you enjoy this little nod to a technique often used by DMs to inject some life and changes into their campaigns. Whether your players take the point-of-view of fantasy heroes or Western adventurers, the collision of the two genres has so much potential for fun mayhem!

"Three Hexes" are simple campaign starters to show that you don't need to do a lot to have interesting settings for people to play in. Feel free to use these in your game, campaign or as ways to spur on your own creativity and imagination!

I've purposefully left a lot of detail out because these are supposed to spur on your imagination! The scale is what I would use in my own world, but if something else suits you better, then go for it. I may have the features moved about on the hexes for clarity, if they don't suit you, move them!

Video Game Backlog: The Enemy Of Gamers Everywhere

If you've been keeping track of me here, on Twitter or Tumblr, you know that I'll be a first-time dad by the middle part of June of this year.  My wife and I are having a baby girl, and we have decided to name her Clementine.  I'm not going to sit here and type that we named her after Telltale's video game Walking Dead character, but I will say that by playing through all 5 episodes of the game, hearing it over and over throughout the course of 10+ hours, and seeing a helpless little 7 year old girl deal with the un-dead, it did rub off on us. It really is a sweet little girl name.  Read from that what you will.  I also am obligated to say "I love you" to my wife after that, because my wife is totally on board with that name.  Not only is she on board, she loves it and thinks it's sweet.  There is no word yet on the middle name just yet, but we're working out the details on a short and sweet middle name. Any ideas? Send them my way.

My name is Justin and my wife's name is Jennifer.  Two of the most common 1980's names there are.  Some people want us to do a "J" name.  Other people are glad we DIDN'T do a "J" name.  Some people we tell aren't on board with Clementine (or Clem, or Clemmy).  And to all of those people I say:  1) She is my daughter.  2) She is Jen's daughter.  3) She will know how to use her biting words and will sling phrases around with the best of them on the playground.  I fully expect her to grow up to be a stand-up comedian.  And although stand-up comedians do sometimes get picked on (it fuels their material), they do eventually grow up and have their own HBO specials and make millions of dollars.

Despite all of the excitement, fear, and anticipation that goes along with bringing a kid into this world, I still want to talk about those vidya games.  Sure sure, call me crazy and tell me I have other more important things to worry about, but I still feel like I have something to say about them; to review them, to discuss the broad range of topics they cover, and to read up on all of the insight that goes into making those fun games along the way.  I don't have as much time as I used to, but I will be on here from time to time spilling the beans and getting as much of this stuff out as I can.  It all won't be logical.  Hell, it might not even make sense.  But I'll try, and it will help me scratch this interactive media itch I have.  So please indulge me. Plus, you'll occasionally get updates on Clem's status, so there's something to look forward to if you're into the whole baby thing.

Back to video games for the moment -

It feels like it was only yesterday when I shut down the mics (not permanently) on the podcast I co-created with my friend Dalyn called Twisted Gamer Radio.  Sadly, when I actually look back it was over a year now. 

So much has happened in that year.  What happened? I have no idea, but that's how life is, isn't it? We try to look back and grasp our memories or accomplishments, only to have them slowly slip through our fingers (thank you Princess Leia for help on that quote).  I'm not done with the whole podcasting thing.  I haven't sold off all of my gear.  I haven't quit paying Amazon to host all of my .mp3 files.  You can still access the RSS feed and download the episodes that are there.  All 13 of them.  But I need somewhere to vent.  Somewhere to release these words and tire me out, so I feel like I don't have anything left on this topic anymore.  Even with a kid and being eventually sleep-deprived, I feel like I will still be interested in and wanting more video game news from the internet. 

This brings me to my current state.

With Bioshock: Infinite coming out tomorrow, I set in motion a plan to get the game for "free".

I normally buy video games months, if not years after they're released (unless they are a highly anticipated title).  Games in the Mass Effect, Bioshock, Borderlands or any other game that piques my interest will be picked up on day one.  I will find a way to get those.  Others, I mostly wait on them because by the time I'm ready to play them, they're cheaper, but also because I'm too busy playing another past game in my backlog that I need to experience.  I almost said "get rid of", and that's wrong.  I don't mean it that way.  In the coming months, I probably won't have any time to game at all, so getting rid of as much backlog games as I can will ease me into parenthood and more importantly the next console generation.  Wait, reverse that. 

If you can't read in-between the lines, that pretty much means I'll be slaving away on previous generation games for about a year before I make the move (and have enough money socked away in diapers) to buy a new Xbox or PS4 console.

I've been on a tear recently, having picked out and completed over 10 games to trade-in for Bioshock: Infinite.  Most of the games are ones I've held onto, but realized I'm probably never going to play them.  Something inside me snapped, and that set in motion a massive picking of games out of my backlog cabinet. 

Some of the games I picked have been out so long they have sequels out already, but I kept them to experience the story and see the progression from the first game in the series to the second, or second to third, etc.  I've always said that I need to pick away at my backlog (even writing a post on Loot Ninja a long ass time ago about it and my problem), but I never stuck to that code of "beat a backlog game, purchase a new game" mentality. This brings me around to my current plan.

I want to go back into my video game backlog and beat games that I started but never finished, or beat games from years ago to help get me the ultimate prize of the perfect game:  Bioshock: Infinite*  (based on current review scores of all major blogs and Metacritic rating.)

Currently I'm making my way through Gears of War 1 with a friend (who needs the co-op achievement), and on the PS3 side of things I started the Killzone 3 single-player.  After that?  I've got to finish a date I started back in March of 2012 with Nathan Drake and Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception.  Then it's on to the other 24 disc-based games I have in my catalog both on the Xbox 360 and PS3.  Thank god that this summer is upon us and the slow crawl to October is on, so I can do some catching up game-wise.

As for the blog, I plan on keeping you updated on my progress and I also plan on reviewing and sharing my thoughts on smaller, indie titles on all platforms that deserve the exposure (how little of it they do get from my blog).  This will give me the opportunity to still hack and slash away at my backlog, but keep you guys informed on all things indie games as they get picked up on my radar.  I'd love to say that I will promise to keep you guys updated on all of this, but you never know just what will happen.  I will try though, so there's that.

How We Fought Bad Apps And Malicious Developers In 2018

Google Play is committed to providing a secure and safe platform for billions of Android users on their journey discovering and experiencing the apps they love and enjoy. To deliver against this commitment, we worked last year to improve our abuse detection technologies and systems, and significantly increased our team of product managers, engineers, policy experts, and operations leaders to fight against bad actors.

In 2018, we introduced a series of new policies to protect users from new abuse trends, detected and removed malicious developers faster, and stopped more malicious apps from entering the Google Play Store than ever before. The number of rejected app submissions increased by more than 55 percent, and we increased app suspensions by more than 66 percent. These increases can be attributed to our continued efforts to tighten policies to reduce the number of harmful apps on the Play Store, as well as our investments in automated protections and human review processes that play critical roles in identifying and enforcing on bad apps.

In addition to identifying and stopping bad apps from entering the Play Store, our Google Play Protect system now scans over 50 billion apps on users' devices each day to make sure apps installed on the device aren't behaving in harmful ways. With such protection, apps from Google Play are eight times less likely to harm a user's device than Android apps from other sources.

Here are some areas we've been focusing on in the last year and that will continue to be a priority for us in 2019:

Protecting User Privacy

Protecting users' data and privacy is a critical factor in building user trust. We've long required developers to limit their device permission requests to what's necessary to provide the features of an app. Also, to help users understand how their data is being used, we've required developers to provide prominent disclosures about the collection and use of sensitive user data. Last year, we rejected or removed tens of thousands of apps that weren't in compliance with Play's policies related to user data and privacy.

In October 2018, we announced a new policy restricting the use of the SMS and Call Log permissions to a limited number of cases, such as where an app has been selected as the user's default app for making calls or sending text messages. We've recently started to remove apps from Google Play that violate this policy. We plan to introduce additional policies for device permissions and user data throughout 2019.

Developer integrity

We find that over 80% of severe policy violations are conducted by repeat offenders and abusive developer networks. When malicious developers are banned, they often create new accounts or buy developer accounts on the black market in order to come back to Google Play. We've further enhanced our clustering and account matching technologies, and by combining these technologies with the expertise of our human reviewers, we've made it more difficult for spammy developer networks to gain installs by blocking their apps from being published in the first place.

Harmful app contents and behaviors

As mentioned in last year's blog post, we fought against hundreds of thousands of impersonators, apps with inappropriate content, and Potentially Harmful Applications (PHAs). In a continued fight against these types of apps, not only do we apply advanced machine learning models to spot suspicious apps, we also conduct static and dynamic analyses, intelligently use user engagement and feedback data, and leverage skilled human reviews, which have helped in finding more bad apps with higher accuracy and efficiency.

Despite our enhanced and added layers of defense against bad apps, we know bad actors will continue to try to evade our systems by changing their tactics and cloaking bad behaviors. We will continue to enhance our capabilities to counter such adversarial behavior, and work relentlessly to provide our users with a secure and safe app store.

Voice Is Here - Online Learning Has Been Traditionally 'Nil By Mouth' But Not Now....

Curious conundrum - nil by mouth
Online learning needs to be unmuted. Almost all online learning involves just clicking. Not even typing stuff in, just clicking. We click to navigate, click on menus, click (absurdly) on people to get fictional speech bubbles, click on multiple-choice options. Yet most other online activity involves messaging, typing what you think on social media and being far more active. Also, in real life, we don't click, we speak and listen. Most actual teaching and training uses voice.
Voice is our first and most natural form of communication. We've evolved to speak and listen, grammatical geniuses aged three and are not in any formal sense, 'taught' to talk and hear. Whereas it takes many years to learn how to read and write and many struggle, some never achieving mastery in a lifetime. Is 'voice' a solution?
Rise of voice
Strangely enough we may be going back to the pre-literate age with technology, back to this almost frictionless form of interface. It started with services such as Siri and Cortana on our phones. As the AI technology behind these services improved, it was not Apple or Microsoft that took it to consumers, but Amazon and Google, with Alexa and Google Home. I have an Alexa which switches my lights on and off, activates my robot vacuum cleaner, plays all of my music and smart TV. I use it to set timers for calls and Skype meetings. We even use it to voice message across the three floors of our house and my son who lives elsewhere. I use it for weather, news, sports results. In Berlin recently, with my son, who has Bluetooth headphones linked to Google Assistant, he wanted a coffee and simply asked where the nearest coffee shop was and it spoke back, giving voiced directions as we walked. Voice is also in our cars, as we can speak commands or get spoken to from Google Maps. Voice is c creeping in everywhere.
This month we've also seen tools emerge that analyse your voice in terms of mood and tone, and also evidence that you can diagnose Dementia, Parkinson's and other illnesses from frequency level analysis. As Mary Meeker's analysis shows, voice is here to stay and has become the way we interact with the internet of things (IoT).
Voice for learning
1. Voice as a skill
Text-based learning has squeezed out the skills of oration, yet speaking fluently, explaining, presenting, giving feedback, interviewing, managing, critical thinking, problem solving, team working and much of what is called 21stC skills, are actually skills we used to teach more widely through voice. They are skills that are fundamentally expressed as speech, that most fundamental of media. People have to learn to both speak up and when they speak, speak wisely and to good effect. It is also important, of course, to listen. For these reasons, the return of voice to learning is a good thing. Speaking to a computer, I suspect, also results in more transfer, especially if, in the real world, you are expected to articulate things in meetings or in the workplace to your colleagues, face to face.
2. Podcasts
Another sign that voice is an important medium in itself are podcasts, which have surprised people with their popularity. This is an excellent post on that subject by Steve Rayson. The book  "Podcasting: New Aural Cultures and Digital Media' by Llinares, Fox and Berry (2018) is an in-depth look at the strengths of voice-only media; the ability to listen when you want (timeshift), use when walking, running, exercising and driving, long pieces having more depth often with multiple participants. In addition, they make you feel as though you are there in the conversation with a sense of intimacy, as this is 'listening' not just 'hearing', especially when wearing headphones. Podcasts should be used more in learning. 
3. Podcasts and online learning
We've been using podcasts in WildFire. One real example is a Senior Clinician, who ran and authored a globally significant medical trial in Asthma. We allow the learner to listen intently to the podcast (an interview) then grab the transcript (automatically translated into text) to produce a more active and effortful learning experience, with free text input. You get the best of both worlds, an intimate and reflective experience with the expert, as if you were there with him, then you reflect, retrieve, retain and can recall what you need to learn. Note that the 'need to know' stuff is not every single word, but the useful points about the scale of the trial, it's objectives and findings.
4. Text to speech
We've also used AI, text to speech, to create introductions to online courses, making them more accessible and human. The basic text file can be edited at any time, with ease, if it needs to be changed. These audio introductions have been used in Train the trainer course and a course fo a major Hotel Chain, where learners may need something more than pure text and images.
5. Voice input
We've also developed voice-input online learning, where you don't type in answers but 'voice' them in. This is a very different cognitive and learning experience from just clicking on multiple-choice options. Our memories recall what you think you know in your phonological loop, a sort of inner ear where sounds are recalled and rehearsed before being either spoken or written. This is the precursor to expression. Voicing your input jut seems more like real and not artificial dialogue. The entire learning experience is voiced, navigation and retrieval with open input. This, we believe ,will be useful for certain types of learning, especially with audiences that have problems with typing, literacy or dyslexia. Voice is starting to creep into online learning. It will grow further.
6. VR
One of the problems in VR is the inability to type and click on anything. Put on a headset, and typing when possible is far too slow and clumsy. It is much more convenient, and natural, to speak within that immersive world. This opens up the possibility of more flexible learning within VR. Many knowledge components, decisions or communications within the simulation can be voiced as they would be in the real world. Voice will therefore enable more simulation training.
7. Feedback
Voiced feedback is used by some, obviously in coaching and mentoring, but also in feedback to students about assignments. The ease of recording, along with the higher impact on the learner in terms of perceived interest by the teacher, makes this a powerful feedback method.
8. Assessment
So much learning is text based when so much of the real world is voice based. Spoken assessment is, of course, normal in language training but shouldn't we be expected to voice our opinions, even voice critical pieces for assessment. It is relatively rare to have oral examinations but this may be desirable if newer softer skills are in demand.
9. Chatbots
Voice interfaces with chatbots have been launched on home devices such as Alexa but we will see domain-specific chat emerge. Google Duplex was the first real showcasing of a conversations sensitive product that can actually make voice calls to a restaurant or hairdresser to make appointments. This is not easy and on limited release. But it is a sign of things to come - more prolonged dialogue by voice.
10. Voice agents
Learning techniques such as mentoring, coaching and counselling will, in time, benefit from this voiced approach. Trials with CBT counselling bots have shown promising results in clinical trials and the anonymity, even the fact that it is NOT human, has proven to be rather counterintuitive advantage.
Conclusion
Online learning needs to pay attention to AI-driven voice. It is an underlying consumer technology, now ubiquitous on phones and increasingly in our homes. It is natural, convenient, intimate and human. It has, when used wisely, the ability to lift online learning out of the text and click model in all sorts of imaginative ways.
